 What is Link Juice?

Link juice is just seo speak for the “credit” that one page gives to another via links.  It‘s like a vote of trust when one website links to another; it‘s that website telling the search engines, “Hey,  this one rocks.”

The root of this concept is the metaphorical concept that authority is transmitted through links, much like juice is transmitted through a pipe network.  A site with good authority,  the kind of juice, if you will,  is being transmitted is much more powerful and nutritious than a grown-on-a- farm site.

 What is Link Juice?

How Link Juice Flows: PageRank Explained

The initial algorithm governing Google, PageRank (for one of the co-founders, Larry Page),  remains as the backbone of link juice‘s mathematical equation. Google optimization has changed dramatically from its 1998 beginning,  but PageRank principles make up the foundation of how links are weighed.

 Here‘s how it works:

Authority Allocation:  Pages have a certain amount of authority (or reputation), and as it points to other pages, it ‘allocates’ (i.e., pass on) part of that authority to those linked to pages.

The “Vote” System: Every link from an external page is a vote.  And not the same voting a link from a giant Harvard.edu is much more important than a fresh new blog.

Link Value Factors: The amount of link juice passed depends on:

  • Authority of the linking page
  • And what is the number of other links on that page?
  • The degree of relevance of the linking page to your page
  • Depends if the link is a “nofollow” or “dofollow.”

Internal Links Matter Too: Link juice flows through your internal links as well, passing authority to your most important pages.

The Direct Impact of Link Juice on Your SEO

1. Ranking Power

Backlinks are still one of Google‘s top three ranking factors.  High-quality, relevant backlinks consistently outperform pages with no backlinks in the search rankings.

2. Indexing Speed

Fortunately, search engine “spiders” (software that crawls the web for search engines to index) come across new pages via links.  More link juice can result in the search engines finding and indexing your pages more quickly.

3. Anchor Text Relevance

Links with your target keywords in their anchor text provide very strong topical cues to search engines.

4. Domain Authority Building

By steadily obtaining quality links you increase your general domain authority and will have an easier time with ranking new content.

5. Referral Traffic

Although not a ranking factor, referral traffic from a good link can be reflected in engagement metrics (time on site, bounce rate,), which do affect SEO in some form.

Common Link Juice Problems and How to Solve Them

Problem 1: Poor Internal Linking Structure

Issue: Authority isn‘t reaching the pages you‘ve defined as most valuable.

Solution:  Develop your internal linking strategy. Link from pages in your site hierarchy that have high PageRank scores to critical conversion or content pages. Use appropriate anchor text for effective cross-linking.

Problem 2: Nofollow Links Not Passing Value

Issue:  A huge part of the backlinks you have are nofollow, so the links don‘t pass any PageRank.

Solution:  No-follow links won‘t transfer link juice,  but they still provide value for diversification purposes and may be successful at driving traffic. Building quality do-follow links is the best long-term strategy, which can be achieved by providing great content,  building relationships, etc.

Problem 3: Link Equity Loss Through 404s

Problem:  Your site has too many (or all) broken links that do not link to anywhere else.

Solution:  Perform Checks in the Search Console and use Screaming Frog to regularly find broken internal links and external links.  Use 301 redirects on pages you have removed.

Problem 4: Too Many Outbound Links Diluting Value

Problem: Too many external links on one page−the page strength (or link juice ) will be split among all of those links.

Solution:  Use outbound links wisely.  Link to good substances for UX,  but it‘s a balancing act.  Give preference to your more critical and essential pages.

Problem 5: Low-Quality Backlinks

Issue: Links come from spammy or irrelevant sites. How do you measure up?

Solution: Use Google Search Console. Keep track of your backlinks profile. Disavow the toxic links when needed. However,  your chief strategy should be the growth of quality links.

Modern Link Building Strategies That Actually Work

1. Create Link-Worthy Content

Create unique, original, high-quality content that meets real user needs.  Articles help by providing authoritative,  well-researched information;  original studies give new data;  interactive tools or calculators draw links because they are useful;  and valuable resources naturally bring in links.

2. Guest Posting with Purpose

Write good-quality articles to reputed sites covering your industry.  Instead of burdening links, add value.

3. The Skyscraper Technique

Locate popular content in your given niche,  improve upon it,  and propose it to those who linked to the original.

4. Build Relationships

Network with your industry influencers and website owners. Relationships fostered over time will often lead to links naturally.

5. Resource Page Link Building

Find resource pages in your niche and recommend your content.

Measuring Link Juice Impact: Key Metrics to Track

  • Domain Authority and Page Authority (Moz factors)
  • Citation Flow and Trust Flow (Majestic metrics)
  • Referring Domains in Google Search Console
  • Growth of organic traffic corresponds with link collection
  • Changes in keyword rankings resulting from link-building campaigns

The Future of Link Juice in SEO

As Google‘s algorithms become more sophisticated, the nature of link juice continues to evolve:

Increasing importance of topical relevance:  links from sites that are topically related to you are growing more valuable than links from generic, authoritative but unrelated sites.

E-A-T Integration: Links are now being factored into Google‘s measurement of Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness.

Natural Link Patterns: Google is more effective at identifying and rewarding earned links than deceptive link building.

Conclusion

Of course, link juice will always be a key element of your SEO efforts in 2023 and beyond.  Although how it works on a technical level has changed since everyone was obsessing over PageRank back in the mid 2000s,  those best practice principles still hold true today.

Ideally, you‘ll want to work from your site link structure‘s technical optimization towards a forever after plan for obtaining true,  high-quality backlinks.  Work on building healthy relationships in your industry while constantly improving your site‘s content and architecture.
